Inspired by watermelon tourmaline gemstones mined in her native Maine, this is 'Tourmaline', part of Sue Rioux's Gemstone Collection.
Breathtaking to view, the interior image is full field kaleidoscopic image created by a 3-mirror system. Within the oil-filled object cell, you'll find dichroic glass pieces, beads, and small baubles in shades of greens, pinks, and purples. The oil cell has square glass knobs on either side, affording the viewer an easy turning method. Sue uses iridescent watermelon tourmaline-colored stained glass on all four sides of the exterior of this handmade kaleidoscope. She then finishes the exterior with two pink rods and a glass bead of pink and green and her signature patina that she adds to all her soldering, resulting in a copper effect on the eyepiece end, four little feet, and other adornments.

"In my mind I see a sunset, light off the water or sea smoke. I can see it finished and I make it."
Sue Rioux has been pursuing artistic endeavors from a very young age. She started as a water-colorist, literally selling her paintings at local art shows starting at age nine. This experience taught her the critical color theory she uses to this day. She moved on to creating stained glass art of all kinds for many years. But she found her true niche designing and creating award-winning glass kaleidoscopes. Her creativity seems to have no bounds, with exquisite oil-cell kaleidoscopes, as well as her signature stained-glass barrel styles, all copper soldered and decorated with special glass details. She works from her home studio, surrounded by the nature that inspires her.
