State Park Collection Rocky Mountain Kaleidoscope

Sue Rioux

The glass Sue chose for the body of this handcrafted kaleidoscope is like a drive down Trail Ridge Road with its swirling greens, browns and blues like the forest and rivers of Rocky Mountain National Park.  The turning, fluid-filled object case features beads and baubles in the same colors as well as slices of highly reflective dichroic glass.  Look closely and you'll even see wilderness animals as Sue has included two small glass charms in the object chamber - a deer and a brown bear.

Green glass rods adorn the corners, affixed using Sue's signature patina that she adds to all her soldering, resulting in a copper effect on the eyepiece end, four little feet, and other adornments.  There are two mirror systems, a 2-mirror and a 3-mirror.

Rocky Mountain National Park is an American national park located in north-central Colorado, within the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.  The eastern and western slopes of the Continental Divide run directly through the center of the park with the headwaters of the Colorado River located in the park's northwestern region. The main features of the park include mountains, alpine lakes and a wide variety of wildlife within various climates and environments, from wooded forests to mountain tundra.

Artist Info
"In my mind I see a sunset, light off the water or sea smoke. I can see it finished and I make it."

Sue Rioux has been pursuing artistic endeavors from a very young age. She started as a water-colorist, literally selling her paintings at local art shows starting at age nine. This experience taught her the critical color theory she uses to this day. She moved on to creating stained glass art of all kinds for many years. But she found her true niche designing and creating award-winning glass kaleidoscopes. Her creativity seems to have no bounds, with exquisite oil-cell kaleidoscopes, as well as her signature stained-glass barrel styles, all copper soldered and decorated with special glass details. She works from her home studio, surrounded by the nature that inspires her.
