"I infuse my figures with narrative identities that refer to other realities. Somewhere between the make-believe and the real, each of the pieces discover their own story, revealed by text, materials, and movement."

Valerie was originally a potter, and clay remains her primary material — though her figures of the last years have enticed her to include metal and glass, as well as natural, found, and fabricated objects. She loves exploring landscapes, collecting and arranging things found there. Old dolls, marionettes and puppets continue to fascinate with their enigmatic spirits and hidden past lives. Valerie received a BS from University of Vermont, 1977 (minored in ceramics) and received a BFA from University of Massachusetts.
